Ironic Twist seeking irony, because sarcasm clashes with my outfit

Friday, May 14, 2004 :::

Science says my brain is happier at my boring, unrewarding job than it would be if I won the lottery or had a trust fund. Stupid brain.

This photo is so scary I can't even post it here. Eating disorder? Crystal meth? What the hell?

In happier news, I just bought tickets to see Sondre Lerche tomorrow night at Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis.

This morning's theme is: photos taken from the 9:30 Club balcony last night without a flash.

Sea Ray

Sea Ray were quite good, but not necessarily memorable enough to stand out from all of the other indie rock bands that comes through town. (Although the cello does help set them apart.) They put on an engaging show, each member playing as if in his or her own world but coming together perfectly. You can listen to the entire album here.

Metric

From the moment Metric's Emily Haines crawled out onto the stage like some sort of rock 'n' roll sex kitten, I couldn't take my eyes off the stage. You never knew what the androgynously pretty singer and her hard-rocking band would do next. Well, maybe you did if you'd seen them before, but this was my first time. A better-rounded music nerd may be able to come up with some comparisons, but I found it difficult to compare Metric to anyone else. For some reason, I kept thinking of glam-rock and Bowie, but that was only during some of the songs. Check out four of their videos here. Start with "Succexy."

The Stills

What can one say about The Stills that hasn't been said? I'm not even going to try to be original. They were amazing. Hearing "Lola Stars and Stripes" and "Still In Love Song" live was amazing. Their stage show was amazing. Check out the entire album here.

DCSOB brings you an exclusive look at cicadas. Well, more like a picture phono photograph of one. Man, those things are gross. Had my own first sighting last night.

A review of the March 29 stellastarr* show at the Black Cat is up on Kludge, finally.

Here's a little something if you like pretty boys:

And a little something if you like pretty girls:

Next, check out the Sondre Lerche worship over at The Modern Age.

Big shock. Pitchfork hates Trent Reznor. Although the man is releasing an entire album created without the use of chords, so I can see how one can be suspicious of the whole effort.

I was like totally a few inches away from Debbie Harry as she sang "Atomic." I feel like a gay man who's just met Cher. There's a concert review with many, many photos coming soon, but here's a preview:

Tonight: Blondie at 9:30. Rocking out old people-style! Damn straight.

Check out the May 10 on 10 over at Defy.

Weekend in brief:
* Sharin Foo is beautiful and The Raveonettes put on a great show, as did The Rogers Sisters.
* The Whips were a too-loud Stone Temple Pilots knockoff with a far less charismatic lead singer.
* The Helix patio party was even better than expected, since the drinks were not only delicious but also free.
* Mean Girls was funny and Lindsey Lohan has gigantic boobs.
* Baseball is at its best when you have expensive seats and parking for which you didn't pay.
* The Brewer's Art is a great bar. I miss Baltimore.
* Too sleepy to go to Clinic and Ratatat last night. If you went, please let me know how it was.
